Chapter 81 - Accident or Coincidence?
Her cold glare made him feel fear from deep inside his spirit. He dared not strike her and said, “Don’t think that by killing them, you can get out of getting married. I’ll find you a man that you won’t dare kill.”
Feng Xiang retracted his fists and quickly left the courtyard. He couldn’t believe that he suddenly felt fearful of this good-for-nothing. It confused him so much that he had to quickly leave that place.
Feng Tianlan sat for a while before calling Chuling to help her find out what had happened this time. Chuling came back quickly and told her that he had died the same way as General Wang. His throat was slit not far from the Feng residence, and a list of his crimes was pasted onto his forehead.
“Is it really a coincidence?”
Suspicions began to arise in Feng Tianlan’s mind. It seemed like too much of a coincidence. But if it were not a coincidence, who was secretly helping her? Feng Xiang had said that he would find her another match. She’d follow the next man to find out whether someone really was helping her in secret.
Feng Xiang let Xu Jiayi give him a bath. He couldn’t stop thinking about General Wang and the shopkeeper’s deaths, finding a match for Feng Tianlan, and the Feng family treasure. He was so frustrated that he couldn’t stop sighing. He couldn’t think of what else to do.
“My beloved husband, are you frustrated about Feng Tianlan?” Xu Jiayi asked as she gently massaged his shoulders.
Feng Xiang let out another long sigh and told her everything that was troubling him. He said with irritation in his voice, “I don’t know who else in this city could be suitable for the role. I need someone who can benefit us and torture her at the same time.”
The first two arrangements had looked perfect from the outside, but they’d been planned with torturing Feng Tianlan for the rest of her life in mind, which had made the matches truly perfect. But these two men were dead now, and he didn’t know where else to find someone who made him happy while making Feng Tianlan unhappy at the same time.
Xu Jiayi knew what perplexed her husband, so she thought about her plan while massaging his shoulders. Finally, she spoke up, “I think Governor Shizi from Ding Nation could make a good match.”
“Governor Shizi?” Feng Xiang thought through everything he’d heard about this man, and they were neither very good nor very bad. Most importantly, he’d heard that he was only a First-stage Spiritualist, so he said, “That’s being too nice to Feng Tianlan.”
Marrying Governor Shizi would make her Governess Shizi. Eventually, she would oversee the Ding Nation government. That would be like allowing Feng Tianlan to go from being a bird to becoming a phoenix. He was dead set against giving her such a good deal.
“My dear, this is the best match. Governor Shizi is a real lech who will take any woman regardless of what she looks like. He slept with one of his maidservants when she was only thirteen. Also, he has some venereal disease. Do you still think he’s a good deal for her?”
After hearing what his wife said, Feng Xiang glanced at her suspiciously. “How do you know about such things?” There were no such rumors in South Peace City, so how could she have known?
“These are the things we womenfolk talk about among ourselves, so of course you wouldn’t know,” Xu Jiayi said matter-of-factly, but, actually, she had witnessed Governor Shizi seducing the maid when she’d gone to a party at Ding Nation’s court.
Governor Shizi had not been embarrassed at all. He’d even tried to seduce her! From then on, she’d known that this man was governor in name only, but he had no substance whatsoever.
Feng Xiang suddenly felt that he was the best candidate and said, “Then we’ll go with him. But…”
“Ding Nation’s court officials are related to the emperor, so what we’ll do is to announce the marriage immediately. Whoever dares to kill him will offend the entire Ding Nation court. The assassin will definitely be connected to the two earlier murders. Feng Tianlan won’t gain anything from this.”
Xu Jiayi knew what worried him, so she analyzed the whole situation for him clearly.
